Mycotoxins. The Silent Supervillain.

For chocolate lovers and coffee lovers alike, mycotoxins can be our worst enemy. They’re like the mysterious super villain that works behind the scenes to squash the plans of the superhero. Or that guy that nobody invited to the party who ends up spilling wine on your new carpets.

In other words, mycotoxins are not our friends, and something we do well to avoid as much as possible. The less mycotoxins we consume from our environment and in our food the better. It may be impossible to avoid mycotoxins completely but reducing them as much as possible with some simple changes to our diet and lifestyle can have profound effects on our health and overall well-being.


What is a mycotoxin? 

Mycotoxins grow on mold and yeast that form in damp environments and during the growing and processing of many common foods.  There are many forms of mycotoxins, including the most common like aflatoxin, fumonisms, and trichothecenes.

Mycotoxins can contribute to many health problems like weight gain, brain fog, fertility problems, cancer, insomnia, and kidney and liver failure. A good way to know if our body is dealing with mycotoxins can be recurring nightmares, brain fog, heightened allergies and increased heart beat, especially after eating mycotoxin laden foods or walking into a rotting or moldy building.  

Prolonged exposure to mycotoxins can cause dehydration and override the liver and lungs, causing a toxic build-up, which dramatically reduces the wonderful healing capabilities of the immune system. 

Where are mycotoxins found? 

One of the main sources of mycotoxins come from damp homes and buildings that have had floods or water leaks. Ensuring that your living space and car is free from toxic molds and fungus is a great start. Whether your home smells damp or you simply suspect it of having mold problems, it can be a good idea to have someone come to your home and test for toxic mold and mycotoxins in the air. There are many great air testing services in most cities. 

Here are the most common foods that contain mycotoxins. 

  • Corn
  • GMO crops and foods 
  • Grains
  • Grain-fed meats and dairy
  • Peanuts
  • Cottonseed Oil
  • Fermented foods (except grass fed yogurt, kefir, and apple cider vinegar)
  • Alcohol
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee
  • Bananas

Do heating and cooking destroy mycotoxins? 

In short, no. 

Heating, roasting, and cooking can destroy many molds and yeasts that form on foods but unfortunately the mycotoxins that grow and thrive on this mold are not destroyed, requiring up to a thousand plus degrees farenheit to be destroyed. 

How can we protect against mycotoxins and mold? 

If you suspect your home or work environment to have mold, get it tested. It’s best to be safe than sorry. 

In chocolate, just because it’s roasted doesn’t mean it is free from mycotoxins and molds. It is imperative to find a high quality cacao that is processed and prepared with care. The truth of the matter is the chocolate industry is not adequately regulated for mycotoxins and mold, making chocolate high on the look-out list for mycotoxins.

WISE Chocolate – The magic behind our beans

We love chocolate. A lot.

We want to share it’s health benefits and healing properties with the world. So we’ve taken great care in sourcing the highest quality most life giving cacao that we know exists.

So what makes our beans so special?

First off, we select only beans harvested in the high altitude, mineral rich volcanic soils of Ecuador’s mountain regions. The trees in this area produce an heirloom variety of cacao, called Arriba Nacional, which unlike more common types of cacao is not hybridized, meaning their genetics are still intact and they can live more harmoniously with the wild environment. These trees, some being over 80 years of age, are fed only by mountain springs, rain water, and the hot Ecuadorian Sun. The clean environment and mineral dense soil provides a healthy cacao that ensures a mineral dense, dynamically flavored, and highly activating wild chocolate experience. This usually means you can eat less of our nutrient rich chocolate and still get that fix. Save the rest for later or share – your friends will thank you.

Secondly, each batch of our beans is tested on site for mold, yeast, fungus, and mycotoxins, to ensure a clean and toxin free cacao. Most of the world’s chocolate supply is unfortunately unregulated and sourced from processing facilities located in large industrial complexes. This can make for polluted ground water and air, and can be festering grounds for insects and bacteria, translating into a dirty cacao that then gets sold off to large distributors or chocolate producers as ‘high quality’. The problem here is that the chocolate industry is unregulated in its mycotoxin testing laws. If a container of chocolate gets flagged for high mold, it often gets sold off to another facility free of testing.

A high mycotoxin count in any of the foods that we eat can lead to numerous health problems and even contribute to a caffeine like jittery sensation often associated with high amounts of cacao. Fortunately for us, we’ve taken measures to ensure a mycotoxin free cacao. It’s as clean as it gets.

We also cold process our cacao in a proprietary manner that doesn’t require roasting, so unlike most of the chocolate on the market, you’re getting a cacao that has all of it’s naturally occurring wild nutrients and brain pleasing boosters such as tryptophan and PEA.

Drinking Pürblack, Shilajit, Moomiyo. Making use of your Mineral Pitch.

Before you start using mineral pitch resin (also known as Shilajit, Moomiyo or Pürblack) you actually have to know that you’re using genuine and high quality resin. If there are any doubts that the mineral pitch you are using is not genuine it is better not to use it at all. In future articles, we will look into the forms and types of shilajit resins (mineral pitch) currently available, the vital importance of using only high-quality preparations, reliable sources, how to recognize good quality products, and the scams and shortcuts some disreputable suppliers have resorted to, rather than take the trouble to provide a truly top-grade product.

For the moment, though, we’ll assume you have procured a supply of resin, of excellent quality. Pürblack for example. Now what do you do with your new treasure?

The simplest answer to that would be, “Follow the instructions that came with it.” And indeed, you could – and should. It’s true that your supply of shilajit should be accompanied by detailed instructions on how to use it for varying purposes. For example when you are getting Pürblack, you will receive an instruction circle with dosage. If you are using mineral pitch on the recommendation of a holistic practitioner, he or she will have some instructions for you, too – and of course you should follow those instructions closely.

Shilajit may be taken at any time, for general health, increased energy, and as a prophylactic measure. Used in this way, it would normally be taken once or twice a day. If you are taking Pürblack Live Resin it is best to use it either in the morning or in the evening. It is timed to support a functional time cycle of your body.  If you are taking Pürblack in the morning it is recommended before food. In the evenings Pürblack should be taken 30 or 40 minutes after food and about one hour before you go to sleep. This is an ideal and if you cannot follow it you can consume the resin any time of the day at your convenience.

High-quality resin has been found to be non-toxic, even in doses well beyond those necessary for a health supporting effects. According to research, it is not carcinogenic, and does not pose any danger of reproductive harm, including inhibition or prevention of conception.

It should be noted that shilajit is not a panacea. It has also been found to be highly effective when taken along other herbs or extracts as part of a comprehensive program.

The most common way to use mineral pitch resin (a.k.a. Shilajit or Moomiyo) is by ingestion – taking it by mouth. The two most common forms of commercially available shilajit are powder, and a thick resin or paste. The resin is the more natural, less fabricated of the two forms. Many consider that since it is therefore closer to its native state, shilajit in resin form is more effective. Nevertheless again any form should be procured only from reputable suppliers as 98-99% of mineral pitch products (shilajit, moomiyo, salajeet, etc.) are imitation products.

Mineral pitch can be ingested all by itself, just as it comes from its packaging. Because of its pungent taste and smoky smell, though, most users prefer to take it mixed with something else. Two classic mediums to dissolve the resin are water and milk. One can also use teas, nut milks, coffee, even honey and liquid chocolate. Using warm liquid will often make the resin dissolve more rapidly. Pürblack should not be taken in liquids warmer than natural body temperature or if you want to be precise the temperature should not be exceed 102°F. This is because Pürblack is purified in a way, which allows us to make it as close to its natural state as possible. It is a third and latest generation resin (also known as Shilajit, Moomiyo or Salajeet) with heat sensitive compounds intact.

When making a shilajit solution, it is best to make only enough for immediate use. If there is any left over, though, it can be kept refrigerated in a sealed container.

Shilajit can be mixed with other superfoods or herbs and taken as a tonic elixir. Taking it in such combinations will increase effectiveness of the herbs, amplified and harmonized by the resin.

Shilajit powder sometimes comes in capsules. Of course the capsules may be swallowed directly, but they can also be carefully pulled apart and emptied, so that the powder can be used directly. The danger of capsules is that they are usually filled with imitation product.

To summarize, there are only three things to remember:

  • Use only the highest quality resin available
  • Chose dosage which suits you the best
  • Dissolve it in liquid ideally the purest water you can get
  • Drink

Schizandra Berry, known in China as ‘Wu Wei Zi,’ translates as the ‘Five Taste Fruit’. It contains within its dynamic essence, all five flavours—bitter, sweet, salty, pungent, and sour. Simmer lightly for 10 minutes- 4 hours and enjoy this ancient classic.

Who is Wise One Superfoods?

Like so many others, he fell madly in love with chocolate.

The Science of Raw Cacao

What makes raw chocolate so amazing and unique? Why is everyone talking about the health benefits of chocolate?

We’ve taken a break from eating chocolate to answer these questions.

Anti-oxidants: Raw chocolate contains more anti-oxidants than any other food, with an ORAC score of approximately 13,000 per 100g, which is more than blueberries, red wine, goji berries and pomegranates COMBINED. Because of the high levels of anti-oxidants, Cacao has been shown to lower blood pressure, improve overall heart function and circulation, and is associated with anti-aging and longevity.

Magnesium: is key for relaxation and healing of the muscles throughout the entire body. Magnesium fights acid buildup, neutralizes toxins, calms sensitivity to pain, quiets nerves, builds strong bones and teeth and is essential for many other functions. Over 80% of Americans are chronically deficient in magnesium. Cacao is said to be the highest magnesium containing food on the planet.

Theobromine and Caffeine: Our 28g bars of chocolate contain 1%-4% the amount of caffeine as a 10oz cup of coffee. Cacao’s minimal caffeine content is often confused with a similar alkaloid, theobromine. Caffeine is said to be a nervous system stimulant, whereas theobromine is a cardiovascular stimulant, increasing heart function and blood flow and has about one quarter the stimulating power of caffeine. Cacao contains about twice as much theobromine than caffeine.

Serotonin: As well as containing serotonin, raw Cacao also boosts the body’s natural production of serotonin, increasing our mood and ability to fend off stress. Magnesium and tryptophan, both necessary chemicals for the production of serotonin, are contained in raw Cacao. Tryptophan is heat-volatile and therefore non-existent in cooked chocolate or a cooked food diet, making raw chocolate an excellent way to obtain dietary tryptophan and maintain sufficient levels of the stress balancing serotonin.

-PEA, the love molecule: PEA, or phenylethylamine, is a neurotransmitter produced naturally in the body when we fall in love. It is contained in high amounts in raw Cacao and is one of the main reasons Cacao is associated with Valentine’s day and as a gift for lovers. PEA is heat-sensitive and is only present in unroasted, uncooked, raw Cacao.

-Anandamide: In Sanskrit, Ananda means ‘bliss’, making this the ‘bliss chemical’. Anandamide is a neorotransmitter that has been isolated in Cacao, and is released naturally in the brain when we are feeling happy. Aside from containing Anandamide, Cacao also contains enzyme inhibitors, which inhibit the breakdown of anandamide in the body, thus increasing its uptake and contributing to sensations of ‘bliss’ associated with raw Cacao.

-Chromium: Nearly 80% of Americans are deficient in chromium, an important trace mineral found in Cacao which helps to balance blood sugar.

-Zinc: Zinc plays a critical role in the immune system, liver, pancreas, and skin. Additionally, zinc is involved in thousands of enzymatic reactions throughout the human body. Cacao is a great source of zinc, especially for those on a plant-based-diet. Other great sources include pumpkin seeds and spinach.

-MAO inhibitors: As well as containing neurotransmitters, cacao also contains chemicals called MAO-inhibitors that inhibit the recycling and digestion of these very same neurotransmitters in the body’s digestive tract. In short, raw Cacao has neurotransmitters AND the chemicals necessary to ensure these neurotransmitters are absorbed into the body and reach the brain. For those familiar with Ayahuasca, a sacred shamanic hallucinogenic brew,  it is made by brewing a plant containing the neurotransmitter DMT (the psychoactive), with a plant containing MAO-inhibitors, which allows the DMT to be absorbed and the effects to be felt. Cacao, unlike this famous brew, is unique in nature as it has the full package of both neurotransmitters as well as MAO-inhibitors. Though it’s effects aren’t as significant as Ayahuasca, of course, this interesting combination of MAO inhibitors to neurotransmitters points towards some of the mystery and magic that this plant has been imbued with over centuries of ancient shamanic tradition.
